Based on a Rocky Mountain legend, Stone Fox tells the story of Little Willy, who lives with his grandfather in Wyoming。 When Grandfather falls ill, he is no longer able to work the farm, which is in danger of foreclosure。 Little Willy is determined to win the National Dogsled Race—the prize money would save the farm and his grandfather。 But he isn't the only one who desperately wants to win。 Willy and his brave dog Searchlight must face off against experienced racers, including a Native American man named Stone Fox, who has never lost a race。

Exciting and heartwarming, this novel has sold millions of copies and was named a New York Times Outstanding Children's Book。

“A kids book with the worst ending ever,” screamed my kid as we finished the book。 I remembered it being much better as a kid。 I was wrong!! And the negative way Native Americans are written is dated。 This book needs to be edited or deleted。

Good book on determination and responsibility。

This was read in a third grade classroom I work in。 The adults in the class were choking up。 It’s a good, short story and worth it for that powerful ending, even if it is emotional。 I highly recommend it。

It was ok, its not really for me。

It is a little short and maybe basic, but wow。 Very touching, captivating, heartwarming, and heartbreaking。 One of the best books I have ever read。

I read this book in fourth or fifth grade and still think of it often。 The ending shook my tiny little world。 It was the first time I’d read a book where the main character experienced such high stakes and such great love。 It was the first time I experienced shock and grief and a bittersweet ending。Full disclosure, this was written in the 80s and set in the 1880s, which comes with problematic elements。 The portrayal of Stone Fox in particular didn’t age well。 But I think a good teacher who ackno I read this book in fourth or fifth grade and still think of it often。 The ending shook my tiny little world。 It was the first time I’d read a book where the main character experienced such high stakes and such great love。 It was the first time I experienced shock and grief and a bittersweet ending。Full disclosure, this was written in the 80s and set in the 1880s, which comes with problematic elements。 The portrayal of Stone Fox in particular didn’t age well。 But I think a good teacher who acknowledges these historical differences and uses them as learning moments could still create a really good experience for kids today reading this in school。 I hope some other kid out there gets as good of an experience as I had with it。 。。。more

Initial Thoughts- tThe front cover shows a sketch of a dog sled race。 There are two characters that are drawn with darker outlines than the rest。 Maybe to emphasize them? I remember my 1st grade teacher reading this book to me and feeling so sad (but also feeling drawn to the sadness of the sacrifice, even at that young age)。 I’m curious to see what it will be like to reread this as and adult – over 30 years later。1/3 of the way through- SO much that I didn’t remember。 Willy lives with his grand Initial Thoughts- tThe front cover shows a sketch of a dog sled race。 There are two characters that are drawn with darker outlines than the rest。 Maybe to emphasize them? And I’m left wondering what the heck this book was about!A few other things I forgot: Willy goes to see Stone Fox’s Samoyeds, but he gets caught in there and Stone Fox hits him, causing his eye to swell shut。 (What?! Definitely a different time。) Also, Willy sees his grandfather at the window of their house during the race and realizes his grandfather is better。 So did he even need to finish the race? Or is his grandfather better because Willy is winning and they’ll be able to pay their tax debt?! But also – this dog had to die because Willy’s grandfather didn’t handle his money well?? I’m so confused。Okay – I read the note after the end – this is based on a legend that the author heard while visiting Idaho。 Wow。 That's a pretty powerful legend。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

In my opinion It was a very good book。 It doesn't really tells it but it shows it instead it gives me how the main character acts and how he is challenging his problem。 In my opinion It was a very good book。 It doesn't really tells it but it shows it instead it gives me how the main character acts and how he is challenging his problem。 。。。more

I read this book because my daughter was reading it in school, and I wanted to keep abreast of what she was reading so I could talk to her about it。 For parts of the book, I had to remind myself that this book was written over 40 years ago when terns like "the Indian" and "the town drunk" were a little more socially acceptable。 I did, however, appreciate that the town physician was a woman, and I thought it was smart to use her as a means for explaining what was happening to Willy's grandfather。 I read this book because my daughter was reading it in school, and I wanted to keep abreast of what she was reading so I could talk to her about it。 For parts of the book, I had to remind myself that this book was written over 40 years ago when terns like "the Indian" and "the town drunk" were a little more socially acceptable。 I did, however, appreciate that the town physician was a woman, and I thought it was smart to use her as a means for explaining what was happening to Willy's grandfather。 I also liked the action and adventure of the dog sled races。The ending, however, wrecked me。 It was unexpected, came on suddenly, and was very abrupt。 I kept turning the page expecting there to be more to the story。 I think there is a lot to digest in this book, and I hope teachers who use it for their classes will take the time to have the hard discussions surrounding Grandfather's illness, Stone Fox's sacrifice, and predictions for what Willy and Grandfather's future looks like。 。。。more

Read this one with my 7YO son。 We talked a lot about how even when we look different and dress different and talk different, that really were all the same。 We talked about the similarities between Stone Fox’s situation and Little Willie’s situation, which aren’t that different。 We talked about how they both love dogs and are trying to save their homes。 I remember loving this book as a child and absolutely loved sharing it with my son。 He says it’s a “happy-sad” book。 💔💕

had to read this to my class for the curriculum。 it did a good job highlighting the literacy skills, but the context is so far from culturally relevant for these kids。

Less than 100 pages long, but nevertheless a delightful story about a child, desperate to save his grandfather and his farm, and a kindness from a surprising person。

I read this book at the behest of my 3rd grader, after his teacher read it aloud to his class。 They read for a few minutes at the end of each day, so my son would come running out of school so excited about the story and anticipating what would happen the next day。 When they finished the book, he told me it was “so sad but so wholesome” (seriously, what 8 year old talks like that??)。 He told me I HAD to read it and promised not to spoil it for me。 Who could resist that? Needless to say, I downloaded it IMMEDIATELY。I was not thrilled with some of the outdated language, but his teacher is wonderful at addressing insensitive language and stereotypes and we talk about all of that at home as well, so I can look past it for a book that got my child this emotionally invested。 My son walked into the room just as I got the the surprise ending, with tears rolling down my face。 I had the audiobook, so we sat and listened together。 This is what reading is all about, folks。 。。。more

A thrilling book。 Full of love, and friendship throughout the whole book。 Definitely one of my favorites yet。

It was very good but, the setting was based to around 1900 hundreds, so it was kinda hard because I’ve never lived in that time area。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 A has been assigned this book for 4th grade。 It is very short and simple but SAD。 I stopped stock still at the end at the shocker and then the book was just abruptly over。 Not my favorite, has very dated stereotypes about Native Americans and the town drunk is used for humor…。

I read this book with my third grade students and I must say that we really loved this story, although we were all very sad with the ending, none of us expected what happens and I who was reading it out loud had to stop for a moment to breathe and try not to cry。 I really liked the whole story of little Willi and Centella。 Stone fox I loved it。
